Radio Awards Categories

New Mexico is home to many radio stations - from large groups of stations encompassing varied demographics to small community stations who are involved in every aspect of their neighborhoods. Our radio division is designed to reflect that diversity:

Metro Radio: Albuquerque
Large Market Radio: Las Cruces, Santa Fe, Roswell, Farmington
Medium Radio: Alamogordo, Clovis, Hobbs, Carlsbad, Gallup

Spanish-Language Radio: All radio categories are open to any all-Spanish or bi-lingual station.



DJ Personality Aircheck

This award is based on individual achievement. Criteria includes: entertainment value, creativity, production value, presentation and impact. On air host must be employed by the station entering the category (no syndicated programs). A maximum of 10 minutes from one show without commercials.

Breaking News

News coverage of an unscheduled event for which no planning or preparation on was possible. Entry may be a live special report or a report aired during a regularly scheduled newscast within 24 hours of the breaking news. The criteria are the manner in which the news organization on responded, presentation of facts, delivery and any hard newselements that may have been uncovered.

Feature News Story

A single story or series of reports covering human interest or other news topics not considered spot or general news stories. Judging criteria will include creative presentation on as well as writing, editing and storytelling.

Continuing Coverage

Continuing coverage of a single ongoing breaking news or general news story. Each entry compiling the coverage shall be edited onto a single tape not to exceed 20 minutes. Each entry shall include a written synopsis of the continuing coverage not to exceed 200 words.

Newscaster

This award is for individual achievement. Entry should contain two complete newscasts from different days without commercials and be engaging, comprehensive and accurate, explaining stories in a unique, complete and interesting manner.

Complete Newscast Station

Stations may choose from any of their regularly scheduled newscasts from any day during the previous calendar year. The criteria are presentation, production values, interest of stories presented, and overall impact of the newscast. Submit entire newscast without commercial breaks.

Sports Show or Interview

This category is open to sports shows or interviews with one or more individuals on a single topic. Entries are judged on both end product of the interview and the skill of the interviewer. Entries should include no more than three five-minute segments without commercials.

Talk Show or Interview

This category is open to talk shows or interviews with one or more individuals on a single topic. Entries are judged on both end product of the interview and the skill of the interviewer. Entries should include no more than three five-minute segments without commercials.

Morning Show

This award is based on achievement in entertainment during the standard morning daypart. Entries should include no more than three five-minute segments without commercials that demonstrate excellence in DJ personality, creativity, production and impact.

Sports Play by Play

This award is based on individual achievement. Play-by-play coverage of a single sports event. Submit six minutes of unedited play-by-play material.

Public Service Announcement

Single PSA or a series of PSAs on the same subject. Judging criteria is based on a single subject and include creativity, clarity and depth of subject.

Public Service Campaign

This award seeks to identify action by a station that results in a positive impact on the community. The campaign must include at least three of the following elements: PSAs, public affairs programming, promotional announcements, editorial coverage, special programming coverage, news coverage and/or station sponsorship. Entries should include a 200-word or less written description of the campaign, the elements used, the scope of the campaign, and a sample of any audio of the above elements.

Legislative Coverage

A single story OR compilation of a station`s coverage of the state legislative session. Issues should be shown through day-to-day news coverage and special coverage. Criteria include presentation of facts, delivery and breadth of coverage. Maximum entry length 10 minutes.

Station Promotional Announcement

Single promotional or series of promotional announcements. The criteria include creativity and production values.

Website

Judging criteria will include graphic design, content and overall presentation. Judging criteria will include content, innovation, visual design, interactivity and functionality. A web site must be generated by station personnel. Submit the URL of your website.

:30 Commercial

Must have been written, produced and voiced by station personnel.

:60 Commercial

Must have been written, produced and voiced by station personnel.

Social Media Integration

This award honors the most effective integration across social and traditional media channels. In 200 words or less, entry should describe how content was modified and enhanced for each platform, and how the cross-platform approach worked to create a unifying message and succeeded in meeting its goals.

Specialty Show

This category is open to on air shows with one or more individuals. Entries are judged on content, audience engagement, pacing and energy and inclusion of elements that keep listeners listening longer. Entries should include no more than three five-minute segments without commercials.

Station of the Year

Station of the Year is determined by the most wins across all categories. In the case of a tie, winner of the Public Service Campaign category will be named Station of the Year.



Television Awards Categories

Most of New Mexico is served by one Designated Market Area (DMA). Because of that, communities across the state rely on Albuquerque television stations to provide important news, information and entertainment that pertains to every community. While this is a daunting task that requires a lot of resources, our member television stations take their responsibility very seriously.

General News Coverage

Coverage of a significant news event or issue during a regularly scheduled newscast. Criteria include clarity, balance, significance and production value.

Breaking News

A single report of a breaking news event. Entry may be a live special report or a report aired during a regularly scheduled newscast within 24 hours of the breaking news. The criteria are the manner in which the news organization responded, presentation of facts, delivery and any hard news elements that may have been uncovered.

News Feature Story

This award is for individual achievement covering a single feature story that aired during a regularly scheduled newscast as relief or contrast to serious reporting. Judging criteria will include creative presentation as well as writing, editing, photography and visual storytelling.

Investigative Reporting

This award is for individual achievement. Judging criteria will include demonstration of extensive research, original investigation, balance, clarity, overall presentation and community importance. Submit up to five segments on different subjects to demonstrate the reporterís body of work.

Continuing Coverage

Continuing coverage of a single ongoing breaking news or general news story. Each entry compiling the coverage shall be edited onto a single tape not to exceed 30 minutes. Each entry shall include a written synopsis of the continuing coverage not to exceed 200 words.

The date of November 8, 2017 was chosen as the date your station will submit for consideration for this category. Judging criteria are presentation of facts, thoroughness, production values, interest of stories presented and overall impact of the newscast and delivery. Evening Newscast

Any regularly scheduled evening newscast, including 4p.m., 5p.m., 5:30p.m., 6p.m., 6:30p.m., 9p.m., or 10p.m. broadcast on November 8, 2017 for consideration for this category. Judging criteria are presentation of facts, thoroughness, production values, interest of stories presented and overall impact of the newscast and delivery. Sports Reporter/Anchor

This award is for individual achievement. Judging criteria will include demonstration of an overall excellence in television sports reporting, overall presentation, creativity, accuracy, fairness and clarity. Each entry should include two package reports, a live report or set report.

Weathercaster

This award is for individual achievement. Judging criteria will include demonstration of an overall excellence in television weathercasting, including overall presentation, creativity, accuracy and clarity. Judging is based on clear presentation of facts, thoroughness, and delivery/communication skills and effective use of available technology.

News Photographer/Videographer

This award is for individual achievement. Judging criteria will include overall aesthetic quality, editing, and creativity in visual storytelling. Entry should include up to five segments on different subjects.

News Reporter

This award is for individual achievement. Judging criteria will include demonstration of an overall excellence in television news reporting, overall presentation, creativity, accuracy, fairness and clarity. Each entry should include two package reports, a live report or set report.

Expanded Sports Show or Sportscast

A sports show of expanded sports reports and scores. Judging is based on clear presentation of facts, thoroughness, and delivery/communication skills and interest of stories presented. Submit entries without commercial breaks.

Sports Photographer

This award is for individual achievement. Judging criteria will include overall aesthetic quality, editing, and creativity in visual storytelling. Entry should include up to five segments on different subjects.

Station Promotional Announcement

Single promotional or a series of promotional announcements. Judging criteria include production value and creativity.

Website

Judging criteria will include journalistic content, innovation, visual design, interactivity and functionality. A website must include timely news stories generated by station staff in addition to those provided by wire services or networks. Submit the URL of your website. Judges will view your site.

Legislature Coverage

A compilation of a station`s coverage of a station`s coverage of the state legislative session. Issues should be shown through day-to-day news coverage and special coverage. Criteria include presentation of facts, delivery and breadth of coverage. Maximum entry length 10 minutes.

Local Programming

A series of reports as a special program or a single documentary. The criteria are significance, resourcefulness, comprehensiveness, thoroughness of research and production values.

Election Coverage

(Only during election years) A compilation of a station`s election coverage. A sense of the campaign, the candidates and the issues should be shown through day-to-day news coverage and/or special programming such as debate coverage, town hall meetings, and other methods which allowed citizens to become better informed voters. Criteria include presentation of facts, delivery and breadth of coverage. Maximum entry length 20 minutes.

Public Service Campaign

Any campaign that serves the public interest. The campaign must include at least three of the following elements: PSAs, public affairs programming, promotional announcements, editorial coverage, special programming coverage, story coverage during a regularly scheduled newscast, or station sponsorship. Entry should include a written description of the campaign, the elements used and the scope of the campaign; video of the above elements; and collateral produced supporting the station`s involvement.

Education Programming

This category represents a compilation of stories that reflects a commitment to educating the community regarding education issues. Judging criteria includes the depth of coverage, compelling storytelling and impact on the community.

Community Issue Programming

This category represents a single story or a series of stories on a social concern that reflects a commitment to educating the public regarding issues in the community. Judging criteria includes the depth of coverage, compelling storytelling and impact on the community.

Multimedia Journalist (MMJ)

This award is for individual achievement. Judging criteria will include the individual`s skill in shooting, editing and reporting the story. Each entry should include two story packets.

Public Service Programming

This category represents regularly scheduled programming that reflects excellence in quality, rather than popularity or commercial success. Judging criteria includes the significance to the public of the subject matter, the scope of the program and the achievement of the standards supporting the station`s involvement.

Station of the Year

Station of the Year is determined by the most wins across all categories. In the case of a tie, winner of the Public Service Campaign category will be named Station of the Year.



Student Awards Categories

Any student affiliated with a member station can enter their work for consideration. The NMBA encourages students of all ages to enter.

Student Newscast

Entry may be from any regularly scheduled newscasts from any day during the previous calendar year. The criteria are presentation, production value, interest of stories presented, and overall impact of the newscast. Submit entire newscast without commercial breaks.

Student :30 Commercial or PSA

Must have been written, produced and voiced by students.

Student DJ Personality

This award is based on individual achievement. Criteria includes: entertainment value, creativity, production value, presentation and impact. Student DJ must have aired on the station entering the category (no syndicated programs). A maximum of 10 minutes without commercials.

Student Reporter

Student Sportscaster

This award is for individual achievement. Judging criteria will include demonstration of an overall excellence in sports reporting, overall presentation, creativity, accuracy, fairness and clarity. Each entry should include two package reports, a live report or set report.

Student Play-by-Play

This award is based on individual achievement. Play-by-play coverage of a single sports event. Submit six minutes of unedited play-by-play material announced by students.

Student Original Production

Any original student production. The criteria are significance to audience, resourcefulness, comprehensiveness, and production values.

Student Social Media Use

This award honors responsible use of social media in connecting your community. In 200 words or less, entry should describe how broadcast content was modified and enhanced for social platforms, and how the cross-platform approach worked to create a unifying message and succeeded in meeting its goals.
